On Tuesday, while heading home, I had the song No Ordinary Worship on replay. As I listened, the encounter between Jesus and the woman at the well came to mind, especially when He said, “They that worship him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). As I thought about it, worshipping God in spirit and truth really is no ordinary worship. Imagine a worship that is never separated from your daily activities—a worship that honors God through everything you do. A worship that doesn’t stop when you exit the walls of a church building or gathering.
I broke down as I listened and paid attention to the word of God that was coming to me. I remembered times when I really didn’t give God my best. I didn’t even give Him my worst. I didn’t give Him anything but expected Him to do everything.
You see, the woman at the well went to draw water from a physical well. She had been with different men, including the one she was with currently, who wasn’t even her husband. Her need was far deeper than the physical. It was far deeper than what she was searching for in these men. There was a spiritual thirst that needed to be filled.
“For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.”
John 4:18
But imagine Jesus meeting you at the well after you have searched the world and ended up in some bad places, only to realize that what your spirit truly yearns for will quench that thirst and fill that void for eternity. “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again” (John 4:14). You’ll never thirst for the things of this world again. Imagine not trusting in money, cars, houses, or being married to a specific person, but fully trusting in the One who is able to keep you for eternity.
When you’ve really understood this encounter, you understand your worship can’t be normal. It won’t look normal. It won’t feel normal. It’s a worship only you, God, and those who have had a well encounter can understand.
God has reminded me that the time has truly come when God desires a worship that is built on the foundation of truth and Jesus Christ is that truth. I’m also reminded what worship is to me, and that’s surrendering every part of me, allowing God to do his perfect work.
What have you yet to surrender to God? Surrending all of you won’t feel like the most comfortable thing to do, but I believe just like me, God is calling you to do the extraordinary in this season!
What have you, yet to surrender to God? Very powerful and thought-provoking questions folks.
